The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has expressed dissatisfaction with two new extensive consumer protection regulations introduced by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), claiming they surpass the DOT’s authority over the deregulated airline sector.
The “Refunds and Other Consumer Protection Rule” mandates that airlines automatically provide refunds for delays or cancellations, regardless of the cause.
The “Enhancing Transparency of Airline Ancillary Fees Rule” will complicate online searches and diminish price competition for optional airline services.
These blanket passenger service mandates are expected to increase airline expenses, which will likely lead to higher ticket prices.
