Fuel Up Safely: Your Guide to Petrol Station Precautions

Petrol stations are a vital part of keeping us on the road, but they also deal with combustible materials. Here's your essential guide to staying safe while refueling:

You and Your Car:

  • Power Down: This might seem obvious, but it's crucial. Turn off your engine completely before refueling. Engine heat and sparks pose a major risk around petrol.
  • Keep Your Crew Safe: Children can be easily distracted at stations. Supervise them closely to prevent them from wandering near pumps or into traffic lanes.
  • Cigarettes are a Big No-No: This rule is absolute. Petrol fumes are highly flammable, and even a discarded cigarette can ignite a fire. Extinguish and dispose of cigarettes properly before entering the station.
  • Put the Phone Away for Now: While the debate on phones causing sparks continues, it's best to avoid using them while refueling. This allows you to be present and focus on safety.
  • Stay with Your Car: Don't leave your vehicle unattended, especially if you have children inside.

General Safety:

  • Follow the Signs: Petrol stations have clear signage for refueling areas, parking, and prohibited activities. Always pay attention to these signs for the safety of yourself and others.
  • Ground Yourself: Sliding out of your car can create static electricity. Touch a metal part of your car before reaching for the pump nozzle to discharge any static that might ignite fumes.
  • Fuel Containers with Caution: Only use approved containers for extra fuel, and never store them inside your car. Heat can cause these containers to rupture or leak.
  • Fire Extinguisher Awareness: Locate the fire extinguisher at the station in case of emergencies. Familiarize yourself with its location and basic operation if possible.

Remember: If you notice a leak, spill, or fire, immediately alert the petrol station attendant and evacuate the area calmly. Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.

By following these simple precautions, you can ensure a safe and smooth refuelling experience at the petrol station.
